Dorus 1962 1970 Vara Jubilee video tape Date video tape: 1995 Source: Pal vhs Antoon (Tom) Manders (The Hague, October 23, 1921 – Utrecht, February 26, 1972) was a Dutch cartoonist, comedian and cabaret artist. In the latter position he became known as Dorus. Biography Although his birth is officially recorded in the archives as October 24, he was actually born on October 23. His father had him registered a day later, because he did not get a day off for a Sunday child.[1] His talent for drawing became apparent at a young age. He attended the ULO, and then followed a three-year evening course at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. Manders was active as a commercial painter and poster designer. Later he also designed sets for theater and cabaret performances. His regular clients included Theater Carré, Lou Bandy, Heintje Davids and Wim Kan. During World War II, Manders was sent to Germany as part of the Arbeitseinsatz, where he was put to work as a painter at a small airfield near Munich. After six months, he managed to escape and traveled back to the Netherlands by train. [source?] Wim Kan gave Manders the idea to do cabaret himself, just like his older brother Kees.
