Sergei Dovlatov is one of the brands of Leningrad-Petersburg, one of the most widely read Russian writers of the second half of the 20th century, who won international fame and the love of millions of readers. His works can be reread endlessly, they do not get stuck in your teeth, each time you discover new facets and emotions in them. Leningrad of the 70s is, first of all, Dovlatov's Leningrad. However, in those years, Dovlatov the writer was known to only a few: a close circle of friends and KGB officers. He wrote stories that he could not publish later and, largely because of them, was forced to leave his homeland. Due to persecution by the authorities in 1978, Dovlatov emigrated from the USSR and settled in New York, where he enjoyed well-deserved success, not only among Russian emigrants, but also among native Americans. The writer did not live to see the recognition of his talent in his homeland for just a couple of months. Sergei Dovlatov died in New York of a heart attack in an ambulance on the way to the hospital. Dovlatov, the writer and the man, is described by his friends and relatives, including the writer's widow Elena Dovlatova, poet and professor of Slavic studies Lev Losev, writer Lyudmila Stern, and a witness to Dovlatov's last minutes of life, Alevtina Dobrysh.
