A transformer is a device designed to modify the levels of voltage and electrical current, maintaining a practically constant electrical power, from one circuit to another, also modifying the values of the electrical impedances of an electrical circuit. Invented in 1831 by Michael Faraday, transformers are devices that operate through the induction of current according to the principles of electromagnetism, that is, they operate based on the electromagnetic principles of the Faraday-Neumann-Lenz Law and Lenz's Law, which states that it is possible to create an electrical current in a circuit once it is subjected to a variable magnetic field, and it is because this variation in magnetic flux is required that transformers only operate on alternating current. AUTOTRANSFORMER: In autotransformers, the primary and secondary windings are in contact with each other. The winding has at least three outputs, where the electrical connections are made. An autotransformer can be smaller, lighter and cheaper than a standard double-winding transformer. However, the autotransformer does not provide electrical isolation. Autotransformers are often used as step-ups or step-downs between voltages in the 110-117-120 volt range and voltages in the 220-230-240 volt range. For example, a 110 or 120V output from a 230V input allows equipment from 100 or 120V to be used in a 230V region. When connected to the power grid, autotransformers consume energy for their operation even when they are not loaded (connected to no load). This internal energy consumption for their operation ends up increasing the value of the energy bill, so it is very important to create a device to shut off both the load and the autotransformer input to prevent it from continuing to consume energy. This simple measure can save a lot on the energy bill and also increase the useful life of your autotransformer. In the video, through a simple calculation, it was possible to prove that just by keeping the transformer or autotransformer plugged into the socket for 24 hours, it alone consumed energy equivalent to a monthly cost of R$18.00 on the energy bill (considering the kWh of the CEMIG utility company in Belo Horizonte - MG). But the problems are not only energy consumption. A transformer has very different input and output voltage and current. This occurs because of the power mirroring, which is one of the main characteristics of this equipment. So in 110/220V residential transformers, which are very common for connecting refrigerators, air conditioners, etc., we have to pay close attention to the electric current values because everything may be correct at the transformer output, but there may be problems at the input. To put it in simpler terms, an electric current of 10A at the output of a 220V transformer causes a current close to 20A to appear at its 110V input. If the correct sizing of conductors, circuit breakers, and sockets is not observed, there is a risk of overloading the circuit. The ideal is to avoid using transformers in homes, but if this is not possible, at least make individual and specific protections for the transformer. This can be done through ON/OFF switches and circuit breakers at the input and output to protect the equipment. 💡 Tune in to #electricity 💡 What did you think of this video?
