"If we hadn't done the work, our house would have been flattened." The Noto Peninsula earthquake on New Year's Day 2024 recorded a maximum seismic intensity of 7. While buildings built before 1981 that were built to old earthquake resistance standards suffered major damage, some homes built over 100 years ago were spared from collapse thanks to their seismic reinforcement. In August, an emergency Nankai Trough earthquake warning (beware of a massive earthquake) was issued following an earthquake in the Hyuga-Nada Sea. Caution against massive earthquakes is on the rise. Ahead of Disaster Prevention Day on September 1, we visited the disaster-stricken areas of Noto and Kuroshio Town in Kochi Prefecture, which is promoting earthquake resistance.
