A sad fact, but, alas, far from rare: a man drank too much and died of a heart attack as a result... The detective accidentally met this lover of strong drink on the stairs on the way to a client, Potekhin, who suspected his business partner Trunov of financial fraud. Having started the investigation, the detective is forced to digress from the routine version related to business. The lover of strong drink turned out to be Pasha Ryumochnik, a famous burglar, and Potekhin's collection of rare coins disappeared from his house. The case takes a different turn: Ryumochnik went to the house on a tip, but what caused his death? And who ordered the theft of the collection? In search of answers to these questions, the detective is drawn into the client's complicated family circumstances and finds out that his young wife Sonya has a secret passion - she gambles at the casino and owes a large sum of money to a famous numismatist, Nikolai Golyshev, who has long been hunting for one of the items in the collection that disappeared from the client's house. Another surprise awaits the detective when the results of the autopsy of Ryumochnik's body come in. Pasha had a habit of robbing an apartment and drinking a glass from the owner's supplies as a last resort, as he liked to say. The alcohol in the client's house turned out to be poisoned! So, was an attempt on the client's life being prepared? The detective is not inclined to put an end to this sad family story - the evidence pointing to Sonya Potekhina's guilt is too obvious... Continuing to work on the case, the detective becomes a witness to a real family drama.
