On March 11, 2021, the Ramón Areces Foundation and the Spanish Association of Human Genetics organized an online debate on 'Clinical genetics specialty: an urgent need in Spain'. On the 30th anniversary of the Human Genome Project, the future of the Clinical Genetics specialty in our National Health System is addressed. Eric D. Green, director of the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) of the USA, participated; Juan Cruz Cigudosa, genetic researcher and advisor for University, Innovation and Digital Transformation of the Government of Navarra; Encarna Guillén, president of the Spanish Association of Human Genetics; Raquel Yotti, general director of the Carlos III Health Institute; and Vincenç Martínez, the general director of Professional Organization of the Ministry of Health. The Ministry of Science and Innovation announced last September the launch of the Personalized Medicine Strategy. Genomic Medicine will play a critical role in this strategy, where Clinical Genetics specialists would be the key professionals in the National Health System to achieve the translation of genetic knowledge into clinical practice, in improving prevention, diagnosis and response to treatments.
