Abdel Rahman El Abnoudi finished writing this collection in 1988. The assassination of his friend, the Palestinian artist Naji Al-Ali, in London in 1987 was his main motivation for writing the collection. Its first edition was published by the General Egyptian Book Organization in 1988. This collection is considered one of the most important writings about the Palestinian struggle and one of the most important collections of Egyptian colloquial poetry. Abdel Rahman El Abnoudi is considered one of the most important poets in the Arab world. He was born in the village of Abnoud in Qena Governorate in Egypt in 1938. He obtained a BA in Literature from Cairo University. He worked in journalism and was a member of the Poetry Committee of the Supreme Council of Culture. He published more than 20 collections of poetry and collected the Hilali epic in five parts. He wrote many songs for most Egyptian singers in a career that spanned more than fifty years. He received the State Encouragement Award in Literature and is considered the first colloquial poet to win the award. Naji Al-Ali is a Palestinian activist and cartoonist. Naji was born in the village of Al-Shajara between Tiberias and Nazareth in 1943. He immigrated with his family. A refugee in the Ain al-Hilweh camp in southern Lebanon after the Nakba in 1948, he was arrested by Israeli forces as a boy for his anti-occupation activities, so he spent most of his time inside the cell drawing on its walls. He graduated from the Faculty of Engineering with a major in mechanical engineering. Mahmoud Darwish published his first paintings in Al-Hurriya magazine in 1966. Naji traveled to Kuwait and worked as an editor, cartoonist and journalist in a number of Kuwaiti newspapers such as Al-Qabas, Al-Siyasa and Al-Tali'aa. Naji presented the character of "Hanthala" who became an icon of the Palestinian struggle against the occupation. Naji drew more than 40,000 drawings.
