General Duong Van Minh was born in 1916 in Vinh Long (sometimes born on February 19, 1916 in My Tho). He is often referred to as “Big” Minh, to distinguish him from “Little” Minh (Sylvain Tran Van Minh, a Christian). Minh is large compared to the average Vietnamese, standing over 1 meter 80 (6 feet) tall and weighing over 90 kilos. In 1940, Minh joined the French army, graduating from the Thu Dau Mot Reserve NCO course. He was famous as a sprinter, so he was promoted to Sergeant. In 1946, he was promoted to Second Lieutenant. Two years later, he was promoted to First Lieutenant, then transferred to the National Army of Vietnam. From there, he was promoted very quickly because the National Army was being established and lacked commanders. During the years 1954-1955, when he commanded the Saigon/Cho Lon Division, Colonel Minh “big” helped Prime Minister Ngo Dinh Diem defeat the coup of Lieutenant General Nguyen Van Hinh and the armed organizations Binh Xuyen and Hoa Hao (through the Hoang Dieu, Nguyen Hue, and Thoai Ngoc Hau campaigns).
