October 15, 1872, Tokyo - March 1, 1939, Japan), was a Japanese playwright and theater critic who wrote about 200 historical Kabuki plays. In 1908, while working at the newspaper Niçiniçi in Tokyo, he met the actor Sadanyi II. He wrote Ishikawa's first play for the Kabuki troupe, Ishin Zengo. Other plays, notable for their fidelity to historical facts and poetic narrative, followed. The most famous of these are Shuzenci monogatari, Muromachi gosho, Sasaki Takatsuna, Toribeyama shincu, and Boncho Sarayashiki. In the later years of his life, Okamoto wrote plays such as Soma no Kinsan, which took their subjects from everyday life. Okamoto entered the Academy of Arts in 1937, becoming the first playwright to be accepted to the academy. Okamoto, who is considered a leading representative of the movement called New Kabuki (Shin Kabuki), also wrote several novels and over 100 short stories. The most famous of his novels is the detective Hanshichi torimono-cho.
