Suckler cow farming - that is what this branch of business is called. But is this way of producing beef profitable? Erika Sauer has a passion: breeding cattle. She keeps a special breed, namely the Red Mountain Cattle. Cows on the pasture with their calves, that is the ideal image for beef cattle. But direct marketing in northern Upper Palatinate is difficult, and customers with the purchasing power you find in big cities are rare. You can't make a lot of money with suckler cow pasture farming, says the chairwoman of the Bavarian Beef Cattle Association. A colleague, Karl Obermeier from Freudenberg, keeps Angus cattle, also in suckler cow farming. The male calves are castrated, and the farmer markets the cattle as oxen. The Obermeiers have switched to organic and direct marketing. They have their own slaughterhouse and also offer burger patties.
