Christians converted to Islam are thus increasingly numerous to settle in the south of Spain. The last bastion of the Moors in the 15th century, the Andalusian city of Orgiva has become a place of pilgrimage for many Europeans who follow Sufism. So much so that it is experiencing a real Islamic renaissance. Artur Ruik, a German-Polish who has taken the name Hamza since his conversion to Islam, has also decided to take the plunge and leave Vienna to settle in Orgiva with his wife Asma and their daughter Choukria. The family aspires to a life tinged with spirituality with moderate Muslims who share the same vision of things. However, disagreements are emerging within the Muslim community, which now represents 10% of Orgiva's population. Christian, a 52-year-old former Berliner who has been called Youssouf since his conversion, accuses the Sufi community of having fallen into folklore, while he believes that following the precepts of the Koran is essential to fully flourish in Islam – a conception of religious doctrine that he is trying to transmit to Orgiva. Vlogger Paloma Ruiz Almodovar, a direct descendant of the last Moors of Granada, is the first in her family to have embraced the Islamic religion since her ancestors converted to Christianity in the 15th century. Through her committed publications, the influencer supports the Muslim community in southern Spain. She is convinced that, even today, the Koran can provide answers to all existential questions and that it is not antithetical to feminism.
