Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia are former Soviet republics that became independent after the collapse of the Soviet Union. 30 years and a few wars later, there are not just three, but six regions that define themselves as independent states. Nagorno-Karabakh, South Ossetia and Abkhazia remain highly disputed territories. However, it is not controversial that the former central power Russia now has more influence in the South Caucasus.
