Being a #victim, according to the Royal Spanish Academy, means: to suffer harm through someone else’s fault or by chance. On the other hand, playing the victim is defined as: “complaining excessively seeking the compassion of others.” People who tend to play the victim seek to evade responsibility for the situations that occur in their lives. In many cases, they take on this role to manipulate others for their own benefit. Those who are considered victims receive greater attention, sympathy and social status, as well as other alleged benefits. Therefore, playing the victim can be “ambitious” by generating certain types of power, such as justifying, legitimizing or minimizing blame for certain behavior.
