Metabolic syndrome is the clinical condition in which at least three of the following disorders occur: abdominal obesity, hypercholesterolemia, blood lipid disorders (low HDL cholesterol and increased triglyceride concentration), impaired glucose management (hyperglycemia), and increased blood pressure. According to the 2006 National Health and Nutrition Survey (ENSANUT 2006), 70 percent of the population in Mexico is overweight or obese; the prevalence of high blood pressure is 30.8 percent and diabetes is 7 percent. Due to these high percentages, it is important to point out their complications, as well as those of Metabolic Syndrome such as cardiovascular disease, since they are the leading cause of death in the country. Therefore, it should not be surprising that the prevalence of this syndrome is higher in Mexico than that currently observed in the United States. To diagnose it, it is necessary to perform a glucose tolerance test with insulinemia, or glucose and insulin curves to measure blood levels. Although present in the minority of cases, there are also some physical signs that help determine if a person has insulin resistance, such as acanthosis nigra (dark mark, like a spot, around the neck and in the folds of the body: armpits, behind the knees, etc.), and knowing the patient's waist measurement (the limit for women is 88 centimeters, and for men it is 102 cm). In Confidence Dialogues, specialists will explain what Metabolic Syndrome is, what the risk factors are, and, most importantly, what changes we should make in our daily lives to prevent it.
