A life that is in many ways a micro-history of a generation of progressive and left-wing intellectuals in post-war Czechoslovakia. How does Šimečka become a communist and how does he gradually break with the party internally and later officially? What does Šimeček's critique of normalization consist of? How does he survive the months in prison and how does normalization affect his public but also personal life?
