On the morning of December 26, 2004, a magnitude 9.1 seaquake off the coast of Sumatra triggered the worst tsunami in history: tidal waves up to 30 meters high piled up in the Indian Ocean, sweeping over coastal areas in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and many other countries. At that time, there was no early warning system. Around 230,000 people were killed in the tsunami. Among the victims were around 5,000 tourists who were on holiday there for Christmas, including 552 Germans.
