Colossians 2 (Chapter 2:1-23) Revised Standard Version Commentary by Pastor Yonggi Cho Chapter 2 1 For I want you to know how great a struggle I have for you and for those at Laodicea and for all who have not seen me face to face, 2 that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, and that they may have all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of God's mystery, Christ. 3 In whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. 4 I say this so that no one may deceive you with subtle words. 5 For though I am absent in body, I am with you in spirit, rejoicing in your orderly conduct and your faith firm in Christ. Walk in Christ. 6 Therefore, just as you have received Christ Jesus as Lord, so walk in him, 7 being rooted and built up in him and established in the faith as you were taught, abounding in thankfulness. 8 Beware lest anyone take you captive through philosophy and empty deception, using the traditions of men, the elementary principles of the world, 9 For in him dwelleth all the fullness of the Deity bodily. 10 And you are made complete in him, who is the head over all rule and authority. 11 In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, in the putting off of the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ; 12 having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through the faith of the working of God, who raised him from the dead; 13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he made alive together with him, having forgiven us all trespasses; 14 Having canceled the handwriting with its regulations, which was against us, and was contrary to us; he hath taken it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; 15 And having disarmed the rulers and authorities, he hath made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it. 16 Therefore let no one judge you in things that are eaten, or in drink, or in respect of a festival, or of the new moon, or of the sabbaths: 17 Which are a shadow of things to come, but the body is of Christ. 18 No one has invented a formula. Let no one condemn you for humility and worshiping angels, relying on things he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, 19 and not holding fast to the Head, from whom the whole body, supplied and held together by its joints and ligaments, grows with the increase of God. The New Man with Christ 20 If you died with Christ from the elementary principles of the world, why, as if living in the world, are you subject to ordinances: 21 “Do not handle, do not taste, do not handle”— 22 which are all to be used for a time and then destroyed—after the commandments and teachings of men? 23 Which have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed worship and humility and severe treatment of the body, but are of no value in restraining the indulgence of the flesh.
