Basking sharks, among the largest sharks in the world, come to feed every spring along the coasts of Brittany. These giants of the oceans are as impressive as they are mysterious, to the point that their encounter at sea has fueled many legends of sea monsters for centuries. These maritime legends, as well as the biological enigmas surrounding basking sharks, intrigue scientists and shark enthusiasts in Brittany. Since the early 2000s, biologists from Apecs (Association for the Study and Conservation of Selachians) based in Brest, have been trying to observe them and follow them across the oceans by attaching satellite tags to their backs. They are joined in their research by young enthusiasts, united in an association called Lords of the Ocean. But basking sharks seem to be disappearing from Breton waters.
