While searching a secret prison in the shadow of the Assad regime’s legacy of torture for American journalist Austin Tice, CNN’s Clarissa Ward made a startling discovery when a rebel fighter revealed a hidden prisoner who still had no idea that Assad had been ousted. His captors had fled as Damascus fell, leaving him without food or water for at least four days. The detainee, who said he was from Homs, had been in the cell for three months and had been taken from his home by officers from the country’s feared intelligence services who began questioning him about his phone, was clearly shocked and frightened.
