The Steingässer family wants to turn their lives around. The reason is a trip that took the family of six from Malchen in the Odenwald all over the world: They visited regions that are already more affected by climate change than Germany - from Greenland to the Alps to Africa. There they experienced the consequences of global warming first hand. This shocked them so much that Jana and Jens Steingässer and their four children Frieda, Mio, Hannah, and Paula want to change their lives. Back in the Odenwald, the new family motto is: live in a climate-friendly way and keep your own carbon footprint as small as possible. Is that possible without it being painful or too complicated? With four children who all have their own wishes and habits? And in the countryside, where there is hardly any public transport? The Steingässers are starting a family experiment: Everyone can suggest what should be different in everyday family life or what they want to do without in the future. The children want to avoid plastic. Since then, packaging has been taboo for the Steingässers. This means more work and time: the family grows a lot of vegetables themselves and buys food from organic or unpackaged stores. Next, vacation flights are canceled, because flying causes a particularly high amount of greenhouse gases. And meat is no longer on the table, because that also causes CO2. Winter is particularly uncomfortable, because the house is only heated to 19 degrees. Instead of simply turning up the heating, the Steingässers chop wood for their economical storage heater. Will they manage to get through the cold season? Life without their own car is also a challenge, because the children in particular have a lot to do. And from the village of 1,000 people where they live, the journeys are long - to school, to sports, to the shops, to children's birthday parties. Can the family manage all of this by bike? Or is it not possible to do without a car? The change in lifestyle has become the Steingässers' passion.
