In this video, we will understand how city council members are elected, since, contrary to what many people think, they are not necessarily the most voted for in the municipality. City council members and deputies, members of the Legislative Branch, are elected according to the proportional system, which takes into account, first and foremost, the party's vote, and not the individual candidate's. This system differs from the majority system, through which senators and heads of the Executive Branch (President of the Republic, Governor and Mayor) are elected, in which the most voted ones win. To elect city council members, we first need to find the electoral quotient (number of valid votes, divided by the number of seats/seats in the City Council). This is the minimum number of votes that all parties in the municipality need to get to elect at least one candidate. After finding the electoral quotient, you need to know how many seats each party will be entitled to. To do this, simply divide the votes won by each party by the electoral quotient. After identifying the vacancies for each party, if there are any unfilled seats, a new calculation is needed: the average of the remaining seats. But we will address this subject in another video. ????
