Video description 1) Experts did not know the exact time when Burton Holmes' video was filmed. So they looked at Holmes' records of his visits to Joseon (1901, 1913) and estimated that the video was from 1901 and 1913. We were curious about the identity of the smiling man in the video. After tracking it down, we confirmed that the man in the video was Ahn Sun-hwan, who was in charge of the Emperor's food table and imperial banquets. And we found out that the dancing place in the video was Myeongwolgwan, and the dancing gisaengs were the best gisaengs in Joseon who were brought by Ahn Sun-hwan from the palace. What we thought was simply a video of a gisaeng dancing in the past was actually a video of a real Myeongwolgwan gisaeng performing the crane dance in front of the only king left in the world. 2) This is a Japanese geisha dance performance around 1905. Thank you.
