CIDP is an autoimmune disease caused by inflammation and destruction of the myelin sheath (protective fatty covering) of the nerves in the legs and arms. Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy causes progressive muscle weakness and changes in sensation, as well as numbness, tingling and a burning sensation in the legs, lower and upper limbs. Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy can be difficult to diagnose. Symptoms must be present for at least two months, and proximal and distal symmetrical weakness with reduced or absent reflexes are suggestive of CIDP. Electromyography is the most important test for diagnosing CIDP. It demonstrates the presence of demyelination. CIDP is a disease that has no cure, but can present an excellent response to treatment. The treatment of CIDP is better the earlier demyelinating polyneuropathy is diagnosed. Treatment aims to stop the inflammation, prevent recurrence of the disease, and minimize damage.
