Matière Grise has decided to think outside the box and go to China, this immense country whose health policy concerns more than one billion three hundred million inhabitants. The reputation of traditional Chinese medicine has largely contributed to China's prestige in the West for centuries. But in the new China, resolutely turned towards the future, what place can this traditional medicine still have? In addition, live scorpion skewers, young deer antlers, bear bile, or even dried lizard powder are apparently excellent for treating asthma and stimulating sexual function… Better known in our country, acupuncture is a central element of medicine in China. In hospitals, acupuncture needles are wielded like magic wands. Chinese doctors believe that the body is governed by vital energy, which circulates along paths, the meridians. Therefore, illness occurs when the flow, the course of energy is disrupted. The treatment therefore aims to rebalance this energy so that it circulates correctly again. Can we do the same? Are Chinese medicine and its secrets really accessible to Westerners? Including in Belgium? The answer is yes. Chinese doctors are increasingly being sought by patients who no longer find their bearings in Western medicine and, moreover, European practitioners, particularly Belgian ones, do not hesitate to train in these techniques. In Belgium, acupuncture is also recognised, sometimes even reimbursed by certain mutual insurance companies. This programme will also look at the broader question of cultural differences which would explain why the Chinese, and more generally Asians, perceive the world so differently from us.
