An unknown number from abroad is on the display. Those who answer the phone usually only notice the consequences later. When the mobile phone bill arrives after a while, it is much higher than normal. Unbelievable: One bill lists calls to Russia that were made at the same time, for the same length, and to the same number. WHAT IS BEHIND THE RUSSIAN PHONE NUMBER? To find out more, we'll go looking for clues. There are several cases in Internet forums with the same description. Telephone provider Mobilcom Debitel assumes that it was a conference call and that the cell phone was operated incorrectly. Network operator Vodafone suspects a ping call. PING CALLS With ping or lure calls, a dialer computer lets the cell phone ring briefly to lure the person called. Anyone who calls back unknowingly dials an expensive service number. The tricky thing is that the consumer has the burden of proof to the mobile phone provider. Anyone who actually responded to a ping call should contact the Federal Network Agency immediately. This agency is responsible for number misuse - but only for German numbers. AUTOMATIC DIALING PROGRAMS A fraud can also be caused by a call forwarding setting that uses an app or a vulnerability in the cell phone. This allows attackers to call cell phone owners and forward the calls to premium rate numbers or abroad. This results in high fees, which the fraudsters use to make money.
