All carbohydrates originate from photosynthesis. Chemically, glycides are composed of a carbon skeleton linked to many hydroxyls (OH) and aldehyde (CHO) or ketone (CO). In addition to the energy function, some carbohydrates make up certain structures of living beings, such as parts of the glycocalyx (external structure of membranes) and nucleic acids.
