http://www.medicinaeinformazione.com/ / medicinaeinformazione From 2000 to today, endoscopic investigations for the study of the gastrointestinal tract have been revolutionized by the development of the endoscopic capsule that is able to study even segments of the intestine, such as the small intestine, that traditional methods such as gastro and colonoscopy are unable to reach and visualize. It is a minimally invasive method that, thanks to technological innovation, is now available in 4 different models, each dedicated to a specific segment or intestinal pathology, and is able, when used appropriately, to improve the diagnosis and follow-up of numerous clinical conditions, including celiac disease, Crohn's disease and tumors. In Italy, even though capsule endoscopy has been included in the LEA since 2017, the method is largely underused, we are talking about approximately 7,500 cases per year compared to 25,000 in France, as emerges from a survey conducted on clinical practice and the application of guidelines in Italy. During the event dedicated to the presentation of the Knowledge Survey on the use of capsule endoscopy in Italy we interviewed: Renato Cannizzaro - Director of Experimental Oncological Gastroenterology at the Oncology Reference Center of Aviano Maurizio Vecchi - Professor of Gastroenterology and Director of the Gastroenterology and Endoscopy Unit of the Ca' Granda Foundation Policlinico of Milan Cristiano Spada - Director of the Digestive Endoscopy Unit, Fondazione Poliambulanza of Brescia Marco Pennazio - Division of University Gastroenterology, University Hospital Company Città della Salute e della Scienza of Turin Michele Perrino - President and CEO of Medtronic Italia
