With growing interest, the development of small modular reactors (SMRs) is flourishing worldwide. Sylvain Takenouti explains how this marks a break in the history of SMR development. He then puts the deployment schedule of light water SMRs into perspective compared to that of Advanced Modular Reactors. Finally, he provides an overview of the main players and briefly discusses the fundamentals and positioning of the French Nuward™ SMR project. A general engineer by training, Sylvain Takenouti spent most of his professional career at Framatome, where he mainly worked on the design and commercial development of the ATMEA1 reactor, in partnership with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI Japan). This experience gave him an overall view of the design and operation of the nuclear island of a pressurized water reactor. Most recently, he worked at Edvance as head of assembly engineering for EPR nuclear island offers for export. Since summer 2021, Sylvain Takenouti has been working in EDF's R&D (Research & Development) department where he is in charge of the portfolio of R&D projects relating to new nuclear reactors (Small Modular Reactors, advanced reactors), their new uses (other than electricity), and the future fuel cycle.
