How do habits actually form? How can you change them? And why do good and bad habits control your life? You can find out in this video. The ideas in this video come from the book: Charles Duhigg, The Power of Habit. Why we do what we do: https://amzn.to/3pH78md Summary: Our brain forms habits to save energy. In this way, it can manage complex sequences of steps (e.g. starting the car) without any mental effort. Habits consist of a trigger, a routine (i.e. the actions that we then carry out) and a reward. These three elements form the habit loop that we go through again and again when we give in to a habit. If you want to build new, good habits, then link the new routine (i.e. what you want to do habitually in the future) to an existing trigger, or create a new trigger. If you want to change an existing habit, first analyze the trigger and the reward in the existing habit. Then try new routines that are activated by the same trigger and where the reward is as close as possible to the reward from the old habit.
