We look for lessons for living tomorrow from the defeat of Amakusa Shiro, who served as the commander-in-chief of the Shimabara Rebellion during the Edo period. Shiro is said to have been born in 1622 in the Amakusa Islands, Kumamoto Prefecture, and was raised by his father, a Christian who had once served Konishi Yukinaga. In his early teens, he went to Nagasaki to broaden his horizons. Meanwhile, people in his hometown were suffering from heavy taxes, persecution of Christianity, famine, and other hardships. Meanwhile, Shiro's father planned an uprising with the local people, and Shiro became their commander. The people who rose up in revolt, worshiping Shiro as a savior and the son of God, mobilized about 30,000 people to the uprising and attacked Shimabara Castle and Tomioka Castle. At the beginning of the battle, they were in the lead, but when the Shogunate army made their move, they renovated Hara Castle and barricaded themselves inside. However, as the siege continued, their food supplies ran out, and the rebels were eventually wiped out. Couldn't a rebellion with so many casualties have been avoided? And why did Shiro have to act as a child of God and lead an uprising? After the Shimabara Rebellion, the shogunate banned Portuguese ships from entering the country, fearing that they might be engaged in Christian missionary activities within the country, and limited trading partners to the Netherlands and China. This was the beginning of what is known as national isolation. Despite the severe oppression, devout believers who could not abandon their faith became hidden Christians, and continued to protect the teachings of God in secret for over 200 years, for generations to come. Furthermore, the uprising that Shiro and his friends started also played a part in reforming the world!
