During the Turkish occupation, the monastery was destroyed many times, by Turkish and Bulgarian raiders. The visitor-pilgrim, in the first and main part of the monastery, will meet the catholicon, which is its oldest building. Its rhythm is cruciform with a dome and is supported by four marble columns. The iconostasis of the catholicon, is carved in wood and started to be made in 1781, by Chios craftsmen. The duties in the monastery are many and difficult: such as the care of the flock, the cheese factory, and even the marangiki. East of the city of Serres, on Mount Menoikeio, is the Monastery of the Holy Forerunner. Its founding tradition is linked to the ascetic wanderings of prominent figures of Byzantine monasticism. The Monastery of the Holy Forerunner became one of the most important religious and spiritual centers of the Balkans, during the late Byzantine and post-Byzantine times. Speaking to the journalist Eleni Biliali, the abbess of the Holy Monastery of Panagia Eikosifonissa, Alexia, the Metropolitan of Serres and Nigritis, His Holiness Theologian, the abbess of the Holy Monastery of the Holy Forerunner of Serres, Fevronia, as well as the nuns Theologia, Eupraxia, Taxiarchia and Pachomia. The documentary series "Bright Paths" is a journey to the most important religious destinations of Greece and beyond. The foreign destinations concern places and monasteries connected with the Greek Orthodox element and are important religious monuments. The purpose of this particular series is to highlight the ecclesiastical and monastic treasure, which is an integral part of the cultural life of our country. More specifically, viewers are given the opportunity to learn historical facts about each monastery, as well as the spiritual wealth preserved in the libraries or museums of the holy monasteries. Every form of ecclesiastical art is also highlighted: such as iconography, wood carving, mosaics, church building. Also, to the extent possible, aspects of the daily life of the monks are presented.
