The ruins of Breitenstein Castle are located on a 220-meter-high steep slope on the northern side of the Speyerbach valley in the Palatinate Forest. The late-Staufer period core castle rises on a narrow rock base that is now only accessible to experienced climbers. The shield wall, built all around in humped ashlar masonry, has been preserved almost to its full height. Seen from the mountain side, its right edge is beveled. The corbels of the battlement on the inside of the wall already show Gothic influences. The attack side is additionally protected by a moat carved deep out of the rock. Behind the shield wall there was a modest residential building, of which the surrounding walls are only partially preserved. Access to the castle was not via the moat but via a staircase carved out of the rock on the south side. An almost rectangular lower castle surrounds the rock, of which only small remains of the wall have survived. Beyond the moat, about 50 m away and 20 m higher, are the remains of a separate outer bailey with its own moat. We hope you enjoy it!!! #burgruine #breitenstein #burgendoku
