The Board Game Criticism Day took place for the third time on March 9th and 10th, 2024, this time in Mannheim. Lino Wirag explained in his closing speech: "We are not yet used to the fact that board games can be read," he explained. "And by reading I mean: interpretation." As cultural assets, they are no different from books, films or theater. Anyone who criticizes a game enters into a relationship with it. In his speech, Wirag also provided a series of "cheat questions" that can make the interpretation of a game easier: Psychological readings are possible, the question of what makes this game unique. You can also ask yourself what no one else has seen about the game. For him, these are all important tools in the critic's toolbox. Theater critic Katrin Ullmann took a similar view in the closing discussion: "Interpretation is the most important ingredient in a theater review," she said. Heiko Klinge, Gamestar editor-in-chief and computer game critic, urges caution here: "Our job is primarily to help people organize their valuable free time," he advised. However: "It is not helpful if you only look at the numbers." There are very different ways of approaching a medium. Maren Hoffmann gave the participants, who had come to the Delta Park Mannheim at the invitation of Spiel des Jahres eV, an optimistic conclusion: "You are the spearhead of the golden age of board game criticism!"
