These are not riches from a fantasy world, as if invented by Tolkien. These are the gifts of the great Lena River. The name Elyuene was first recorded by the explorer Pyandoy in 1619-1628. It is believed that it goes back to the Evenk "yene" - "big river". Lena is the largest river in the world that flows entirely in the permafrost region. It begins in the Irkutsk region and ends far to the north in Yakutia. Despite the harsh climate, people have always willingly settled on its banks. This great river fed both northern nomads and Russian industrialists, who found the richest deposits of natural resources here. In the mid-19th century, the Lena gold mines began operating. This marked the beginning of the gold rush, traces of which can still be seen today.
