The cameras follow four French families for an entire year. Neither rich enough to enjoy life peacefully, nor needy enough to benefit from state aid, each one struggles to avoid poverty. Martine lives with her 24-year-old daughter in a council house in Pantin. The loss of her job plunges her into serious difficulties. At 32, Yann is a seasonal worker in a ski resort in Auvergne. He and his partner Cécile do not shy away from work. However, with their two daughters, they could not get by without the help of the family. A young teacher, Alexandre is forced to share an apartment. André, a former wrestler, lives out his retirement in a house in poor condition.
