Around 1.5-1.8 million people in Germany suffer from AF. The likelihood of this disease increases with age. It is estimated that around 2% of the total population and around 7-10% of those over 65 are affected. One main problem is that with atrial fibrillation, blood clots form more quickly, which then increase the risk of strokes, for example. Unfortunately, however, many people do not know or notice that they have atrial fibrillation and therefore an increased risk of strokes, for example. And that can be extremely dangerous. So, pay attention to the first signs. 20 percent of all strokes are caused by atrial fibrillation, which is over 50,000 strokes per year in Germany. What is atrial fibrillation? Atrial fibrillation is a so-called cardiac arrhythmia, i.e. the beat, or rhythm, of the beating heart is disturbed. With atrial fibrillation, the frequency is around 350-600x per minute. And how does this happen? Very simple: with atrial fibrillation, the so-called sinus node no longer sets the pace for the heartbeat, but there are additional excitations in the atria. The atrial walls no longer contract correctly and the excitation flows uncoordinatedly through the atrium muscles. Only some of the uncontrolled impulses are passed on to the ventricles. The atria can no longer fill completely with blood. This also reduces the amount of blood ejected by the heart. Cardiac output is reduced by around 20%. And, all this chaos makes blood clots easier to form, increasing the risk of stroke. This is why atrial fibrillation is so dangerous. This risk naturally increases with age and with the presence of additional comorbidities such as high blood pressure or diabetes. Causes of atrial fibrillation: Atrial fibrillation is usually the result of another chronic illness, e.g. high blood pressure or coronary heart disease. In some cases, however, no clear cause can be found. And then there are clear risk factors. These risk factors for atrial fibrillation include 1) heavy or frequent alcohol consumption, 2) smoking, 3) diabetes, 4) high blood pressure, 5) being significantly overweight, 6) nocturnal apnea and, unfortunately, as is often the case, 7) unfavorable genetics. Therapy for atrial fibrillation There are several options for treating atrial fibrillation and in the video I discuss 1) medication, 2) catheter ablation and 3) cardioversion, or “shocking”. Very important: medication does not help everyone. If medication does not stop the fibrillation, then so-called catheter ablation often helps. In emergencies or for acute therapy, cardioversion is often performed. ⏩ Find out more in the video. ▬ About this channel ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ With “Video Visit Dr. Weigl” you have found the current and medical-scientific channel that describes topics relating to pain, #medicine and #health in an understandable way but based on facts, guidelines and studies. ▬ Even more videos ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Our heart and cardiovascular system: https://bit.ly/Herz_Video Causes and consequences of high blood pressure: https://bit.ly/BluthochdruckUrsachenF...
