Mr. McCarthy, a friend of the large landowner John Turner, is brutally murdered in the Boscombe Valley. The main suspect is the son of the murdered man, because shortly before his father's death they were seen together, heatedly arguing about something. McCarthy Jr. was holding a gun. As the investigation later found out, there were traces of numerous blows on the murdered man's head, inflicted by some blunt object, which could well have been the butt of a gun. The young man was immediately arrested; during interrogation he was accused of premeditated murder and taken to court. There, the trial was scheduled for the next session. Sherlock Holmes himself takes up the investigation; to him, unlike the police, not everything seems so clear and obvious.
