These are substances such as bisoprolol and metoprolol. And until recently, they were also prescribed very frequently: In 2017, metoprolol was the 6th most commonly prescribed drug in Germany and bisoprolol the 7th most commonly prescribed drug. Of course, this also shows how prevalent cardiovascular diseases are in our society, but perhaps also how quickly beta-blockers are prescribed. What do beta-blockers actually do? Beta-blockers get their name from the binding sites they inhibit, the beta-adrenoceptors. There are two types, with the beta-blockers you take acting primarily on the so-called beta1 receptors. In the body, beta-blockers inhibit the effect of the stress hormone adrenaline and the neurotransmitter noradrenaline. This leads to a reduction in the heart rate. The heart muscle requires less oxygen and is relieved. And this is exactly what patients with chronic heart failure or coronary heart disease benefit from. Also to keep side effects as low as possible. Now for my specific tips that you should follow if you are taking beta-blockers. Tip 1: Gradually increase the dose and do not overdose One of the side effects of beta-blockers is that they cause a slow pulse, i.e. so-called bradycardia. This occurs when the heart beats more slowly than is normal for the corresponding age. Bradycardia can cause dizziness and possibly short episodes of unconsciousness. 2nd tip: avoid taking beta-blockers in the evening if possible Beta-blockers can occasionally cause sleep disorders and an increased occurrence of nightmares. In plain language, occasional means: 1-10 out of 1,000 treated patients. Especially if you as a patient are already having trouble sleeping, you should therefore take beta-blockers in the morning. 3rd tip: if you are asthmatic, only take cardioselective beta-blockers There is constant debate as to whether asthmatics should take beta-blockers at all. The reason for this is that beta-receptors are also located in the lungs. And if they are blocked, an asthma attack can occur. Non-selective beta-blockers such as propranolol act on the heart and lungs in roughly equal parts. However, this is not what asthmatics want. This is why these beta-blockers should not be used here. 4th tip: Be careful as a diabetes patient It is extremely important for diabetes patients to have their blood sugar levels under control. If it is repeatedly too high, there is a risk of secondary diseases such as blindness, strokes and leg amputations. Low blood sugar is also dangerous: if the blood level is below 50 mg/dL, this is known as hypoglycemia. 5th tip: Take the medication regularly Where there is an effect, there are side effects. This also applies to beta-blockers: They help with many cardiovascular diseases that are life-threatening for patients in the long term. ▬ About this channel ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ With “Video Visit Dr. Weigl” you have found the current and medical-scientific channel that describes topics relating to pain, #medicine and #health in an understandable way but based on facts, guidelines and studies. ▬ Even more videos ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Our heart and cardiovascular system: https://bit.ly/Herz_Video Causes and consequences of high blood pressure: https://bit.ly/BluthochdruckUrsachenF...
