HIV is a virus that attacks our immune system; it can remain latent for years, without showing any symptoms and therefore act in total unawareness of those who have contracted it. AIDS, with which it is often confused, is an advanced clinical stage of HIV infection, in which the CD4 cells of the immune system drop dramatically, causing our body to lose the ability to fight even the most trivial infections. In addition to dealing with HIV, people living with this virus must also fight every day with the stigma and taboos that surround the virus. While science moves forward, in fact, society sometimes lags behind due to misinformation and prejudice, thus fueling a climate of fear and terror that does nothing but play into the hands of the virus: moving in silence. Scientific treatment has progressed significantly in the last three decades: why hasn't our perception of people living with HIV evolved at the same speed? Talking about it more, using condoms and getting tested are the weapons we have to fight the virus. Listening to the stories of those living with HIV, on the other hand, helps fight prejudice.
