Big feelings are tempting. They make us feel alive and meaningful, and the exhaustion afterwards makes us believe we have experienced and achieved a lot. But that is a mistake. Acting out big emotions - whether through screaming, hitting pillows or crying hard - embodies what is known as catharsis. However, it is comparable to a high or a short flash in the pan. Simply acting out feelings does not mean that they have really been integrated or processed.
