The Apache attack helicopter is one of the best in its class. The latest model, the AH-64 E, also known as the Guardian, is equipped with much more powerful engines than in the past, making it faster and more maneuverable than its predecessor. Another innovation in the cockpit: the powerful on-board computer. With its help, the pilots can target up to 250 targets simultaneously and fire at them with a swiveling 30-millimeter cannon, rockets or even drones. Helicopters were used on a large scale for the first time in the Vietnam War. However, the models used were mainly developed for transport and reconnaissance tasks and were inadequately armed. The tropical climate also caused problems, as the highly stressed components in particular corroded in the prevailing high humidity and temperature. In 1972, the US Army therefore put out a development contract for a tropical-proof, all-weather heavy combat helicopter. This resulted in one of the best combat helicopters on the planet, the AH64 Apache. The Apache is a two-seater combat helicopter built in Mesa, Arizona (USA). The cockpit has front and side windows made of bulletproof glass and is equipped with armor plates all around and between the two pilots. The Apache is armed with a whole arsenal of air-to-ground and air-to-air missiles. It also has a swiveling 30mm cannon built into the nose of the Apache. Since its first use in Panama in 1989, the Apache has been continuously developed. Today, the latest model, the Apache Block III, is about to be used for the first time in a crisis area. The Block III puts all previous models in the shade. It is already considered the new "Super Apache". We speak to the development engineers and are exclusively present with the camera during the construction of the new Apache. In Europe, efforts are also being made to develop a new weapons platform in the style of the Apache. The UH TIGER, built by Airbus Helicopters, could be a direct competitor to the Apache, as it is slightly lighter and more maneuverable. The German army and the French army have already successfully deployed the European combat helicopter in Afghanistan. Other nations have also ordered the TIGER. The Australian army recently switched from the Apache to the Tiger. A tough "neck and neck race" seems to be developing. But this does not faze the developers at Boeing. The Apache is being continuously developed. It can now even control drones, making it even more dangerous than before. The Apache is a helicopter that is used exactly where it is most dangerous.
