Last Thursday, June 8th, we welcomed to our Verín Library Mr. Antonio Piñero, a Spanish philologist, historian, academic and writer, specialized in the life of Jesus of Nazareth. Synopsis: To date, there is no purely historical edition of the New Testament, made with strictly academic, non-denominational criteria, without any prior religious tendency. The correct understanding of texts written almost two millennia ago requires explanatory work based on literary and historical knowledge, not just theological. Contemplating the books of the New Testament with new eyes after the same critical treatment given to any other text from Greco-Latin Antiquity often presents a different and even more interesting meaning. The authors try to answer questions continually asked in the media: How much historical truth is there in the Gospels? How much fiction? Did the early Church add too much of its own to the tradition about Jesus of Nazareth so that it became distorted? What do historians and commentators of the very diverse confessions of Christianity think about this?
