Steak, meatballs or skewers are particularly popular - especially from the grill. We look at what is in meatballs from the refrigerated section. In the supermarket, they are made from pork, beef or poultry. One statement in particular catches our eye on the list of ingredients: meat content "partly chopped". What is behind the wording? SUSPICION OF SEPARATORY MEAT There is always talk that the meat industry secretly uses a particularly finely ground sludge substance made from slaughterhouse waste in its products. If mechanically separated meat is included, however, the manufacturer must disclose this. If brands want to cheat, they would have an easy time of it - because current laboratory methods are not clear enough to detect mechanically separated meat beyond doubt. TRICKS WITH ANTIBIOTICS The use of antibiotics in chicken meat production has been criticized for years. The problem: the excessive use of antibiotics in livestock farming, too, means that antibiotic-resistant germs develop more quickly. These can get onto the fields and thus onto plant-based foods via wastewater and liquid manure. GOULASH WITHOUT MEAT? Ready meals such as pizza, pasta boxes or packet soups are booming - and manufacturers are pulling out all the stops when designing their packaging. Natural ingredients, plump tomatoes, lots of vegetables and large pieces of meat are supposed to whet the appetite. We take a look at how much meat is really in it. ANIMAL SUFFERING INSTEAD OF OUTDOOR RUNNING SPACE AND FRESH AIR? In Germany, there are legal minimum standards for animal husbandry. Organic farming goes far beyond the legal requirements. But other companies are also investing in more animal welfare and better conditions. One indicator for consumers is the type of husbandry. Level 4 is best for the animals, but consumer advocates warn: A high level of husbandry on the packaging is no guarantee of animal welfare.
