In northern Europe, the security political game plan is changing rapidly as a result of the melting ice of the Arctic and developments on the Kola Peninsula. With Sweden in NATO, the entire Nordic and Baltic countries are part of NATO. What are the challenges for NATO in the defense of Northern Europe? This seminar focuses on NATO's role in the defense of Northern Europe. During 2024, Sweden chairs both the Nordic Baltic Eight (NB8) and the Nordic Five (N5). In addition, with Sweden as a member of NATO, the informal foreign and security policy collaborations enter a new era – the collaborations are no longer collaborations between Nordic countries but collaborations where each party is a member of NATO. As a member of NATO, Sweden must together with allies defend territory from Turkey to Alaska. Naturally, however, the center of gravity for Sweden lies mainly in northern Europe, from the Baltics up to the Arctic.
