From January 1, 2024, composting will become mandatory for everyone, we'll go over the rules with you today. Composting is a habit to get into, but rather than a constraint, see it as an investment that enriches the soil in your garden. It is important to choose the right dimensions for your composters, depending on the size of your garden and your waste production! To compost, two options are available to you: Compost in the open air. This is the most economical model but also the least aesthetic. You can leave a free space dedicated to your organic waste or you can create a double or even triple "U" structure, with wooden boards or pallets. One of the disadvantages is that your compost is not protected from the elements, the cold, excessive humidity and very dry weather can harm your compost. Compost in closed bins. This solution is more discreet and allows you to manage aeration according to the weather. For the work to go well, you need to alternate the three categories of constituents: wet waste, also called green, dry waste, called brown, and neutral waste. Wet/green, that speaks for itself, there is a liquid that comes out of the material! We classify all garden and kitchen waste in this category. Dry/brown: these are the sizes that you let dry, we call them carbon material. Neutral waste such as eggshells, coffee filters, paper towels, cardboard and unprinted paper without glue residue. Start by spreading a thin layer of dry material then, every 10 or even 15 cm of wet layer, add a dry layer of a few centimeters. Mix the neutral layer with the wet layer. Finally, two to three times a year (ideally every two months), it is a good idea to mix or turn your pile, either with a suitable tool or with your fork. You can also use an organic product that will have the same effect and do the work for you. Be careful not to add any protein and cooked products, this attracts rodents. We also make sure not to dispose of animal droppings, cats or dogs, to avoid contamination by toxocariasis. Do not throw away the peel of citrus fruits either, it contains a chemical protection that is harmful to the compost. Stay vigilant against weeds that can grow quickly, avoid throwing away roots or seeds. Likewise, do not mix diseased plants in the compost. Since we can no longer burn, you have two possible actions: take them to the recycling center, which would perpetuate the dangerous cycle of keeping the bacteria alive and spreading them, or use the third bin. This is what I will do with the thermoformed bin. I will let the material decompose quietly in this environment. This will also save me a trip to the recycling center and I will use this contribution in the pots and on the well-established trees and shrubs.
