In the summer of 2024, a street in Kharkiv was named after Soviet dissident and Ukrainian politician Genrikh Altunyan. We discussed this news with Alexander Altunyan, Genrikh's son. Genrikh Altunyan was expelled from the party in 1968 for his connections with dissidents and dissemination of Sakharov's letter. In 1969, he became a member of the Initiative Group for the Protection of Human Rights in the USSR, after which he was soon arrested and sentenced to 3 years in prison. Altunyan was arrested for the second time in 1980 and sentenced to 7 years in a camp and 5 years of exile. He was released in 1987 during Gorbachev's amnesty.
