In this edition of the Aerospace Colloquium, we will pay a well-deserved tribute to the life and work of César Augusto Ocampo Rodríguez, one of the most outstanding Colombian scientists in the aerospace field. Ocampo, who worked for NASA for more than 26 years, made essential contributions to the planning of space missions and the design of interplanetary trajectories, specializing in astrodynamics. His best-known legacy is the development of the Copernicus software, a crucial tool for the optimization of space routes, used in missions projected to destinations such as Mars and other celestial bodies. This software allows spacecraft to calculate efficient trajectories, minimizing fuel consumption and optimizing mission viability. In addition to his work at NASA, Ocampo was scientific director of the Colombia in Orbit project, through which the first Colombian satellite was launched into space. In 2017, he assumed the position of general director of Colciencias, promoting science and technology in his native country. His commitment to education and the dissemination of knowledge was also a hallmark of his career, inspiring young people and professionals in Colombia to dream of the stars. Sadly, César Ocampo recently passed away, but his influence lives on in the aerospace field and science in Colombia. This colloquium will feature guests who will delve into his legacy, remembering his impact and unwavering dedication to space exploration and the promotion of scientific development.
