What does ADHD look like in adults and does it manifest differently in women than in men? Why is Gabor Maté wrong in saying that ADHD has no genetic basis? Can ADHD be reduced to problems with self-regulation? And why are the cultural and social context and the role of the environment supporting or maintaining symptoms so invaluable in treatment? I spoke with Kajetana Foryciarz, a psychiatrist, cognitive-behavioral psychotherapist, doctor of medical sciences, specialist in internal medicine and family medicine with almost 30 years of experience in medical work. We focused on the neurodevelopmental disorder widely discussed today, which is ADHD, or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. We talk about the symptoms and clinical picture of ADHD in adults and children, the role of the environment supporting and maintaining symptoms, showing how forcing children to be the same only increases their difficulties. It is therefore critical of the education system and culture that influences how ADHD develops in women (towards internalizing disorders) and in men (towards externalizing disorders). We also discuss the issues of interdisciplinary diagnosis, the sense of making it, as well as treatment, pharmacotherapy and therapeutic interactions. This is a very comprehensive conversation that I hope will clarify many issues and myths about ADHD and support both neuroatypical people and those who would like to better understand their loved ones with ADHD.
