Most people breathe badly, and have thoracic or even clavicular breathing. This was also my case before I discovered breathing in sophrology. Disadvantages of thoracic breathing: only oxygenates the upper part of the lungs, less good oxygenation of the body, feeling of oppression, increases stress. Abdominal breathing is our natural breathing but we lose it little by little with the stress of daily life which gradually blocks our diaphragm. The diaphragm is a very important respiratory muscle, thanks to its contraction and relaxation it allows the entry and expulsion of air. (to learn more: the anatomy and functioning of abdominal breathing are explained in the video (start at 1:46) Benefits of abdominal breathing: better oxygenation of the body (so we have access to our full potential), reduces stress, improves sleep, improves digestion. Practice abdominal breathing: an exercise to learn to breathe with the belly is to start by exhaling to completely empty your lungs and then let your belly relax naturally when inhaling.
