In the middle of the Salado ravine, in the heart of the Atacama Desert, lies the small town of Llanta, linked to the mining and railway development in the area. This place was home to a station and a workshop, which were part of the Chañaral-Potrerillos Railway. An unusual storm in 2015 brought heavy rainfall, which caused the Salado River to rise and overflow. A landslide swept away towns and a large part of the Chañaral-Potrerillos railway section disappeared. Thus, the railway workshop in Llanta, which also suffered the passage of the mudflow, was completely out of use until today.
